Saint Etheldreda St. Etheldreda was an English Saxon Princess and then Queen who remained a virgin and valued purity and chastity throughout her married life. She desired to become a nun and was eventually consecrated Abbess of Ely by St. Wilfrid. Her body remained incorrupt for centuries until King Henry VIII destroyed most of the Shrines and Monasteries in England including St. Etheldreda's. St. Wilfrid St. Wilfrid was a Saxon Bishop and St. Etheldreda's spiritual advisor. An important Catholic figure, it was due to St. Wilfrid that the English calendar was unified with that of Rome's at the Council of Whitby. St. Wilfrid consecrated St. Etheldreda as Abbess of Ely. The Pilgrim In medieval times in England, people would make pilgrimages to St. Etheldreda's shrine and receive pewter pilgrim badges of the Saint for completing the pilgrimage. |
