Saint Nicholas Owen Maker of priest holes throughout England during the persecution of Catholics and Catholic priests under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I. He worked with Fr. Henry Garnet and Fr. John Gerard and was one of the first Jesuit lay brothers. He eluded the government for many years until his final capture and torture to death. Fr. Henry Garnet Head of the Jesuits in England during fierce persecution and execution of Catholic priests. He guided his priests and ran an amazing network of priests and recusants that kept the Catholic Faith alive in England. Eventually he was martyred in 1601.
Fr. John Gerard Blessed Fr. Edward Oldcorne Jesuit priest who was captured with St. Nicholas Owen and Martyred at Red Hill in 1606 after torture and torment for his Catholic Faith and priesthood. He was Beatified in 1929 and is an English Martyr.
Blessed Ralph Ashley Servant to Blessed Fr. Oldcorne and a Jesuit lay brother, he hid with St. Nicholas Owen when the house they were at was raided by priest hunters. He was arrested and Martyred at Red Hill in 1606 with Fr. Oldcorne. As Fr. Oldcorne waited on the ladder to die, Brother Ralph kissed Fr. Oldcorne's feet and said "What a happy man I am to follow in the steps of my sweet father." He was Beatified in 1929 and is an English Martyr. Sir Robert Cecil Secretary of State under Queen Elizabeth I and King James I of England, he was also King James I's spymaster and encouraged the Gunpowder Plot to capture the Jesuits he so hated and insight further persecution of Catholics. He despised the Catholic Church and was especially pleased to capture St. Nicholas Owen. When the Saint died under torture, Robert Cecil attempted to spread lies about St. Nicholas Owen's suicide which was proven false due to St. Nicholas' inability to even move his hands. Henry Owen Brother of St. Nicholas Owen, Henry spent most of his life printing outlawed Catholic literature, thus providing Catechism, the truths of the Church and spiritual reading for the oppressed Catholics in England. |
