Saint Polydore Plasden. A Catholic priest who returned to England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. He had a specific devotion to the Eucharist and agreed to surrender to his death to protect the Holy Eucharist. Tortured and tried he was sentenced to die at Tyburn when he was 28 years old. Sir Walter Raleigh managed to change the sentence to hanging until he was dead so that he was not alive when his body was butchered. Sir Walter Raleigh An English aristocrat, writer, poet, soldier, courtier, and explorer who is also largely known for popularising tobacco in England. He was present at Tyburn for the executions and fought for Saint Polydore's reprieve, eventually managing to persuade Topcliffe to allow Fr. Polydore to hang until he was dead before he was butchered. He was eventually executed for his suspected involvement in the Gunpowder Plot. Richard Topcliffe A notorious killer, he was Queen Elizabeth's top priest hunter and was permitted his own private torture chamber in his own home. He was responsible for the torture of Saints such as Fr. Robert Southwell. Sadistic and vile, he was admired by the Queen and sought to destroy Catholicism and especially Catholic proests whom he insisted on seeing hanged, drawn and quartered in a brutal manner. He personally captured, tortured and oversaw the hanging of Fr. Polydore. Saint Edmund Gennings. Fellow seminarian, Catholic priest and good friend to Saint Polydore Plasden, he was captured while celebrating Mass with Fr. Polydore at the home of Saint Swithun Wells. They were imprisoned, tried and tortured together and encouraged one another. Along the route to Tyburn they were separated and Saint Edmund was hanged, drawn and quartered outside Saint Swithun's house. Blessed John Mason. A servant to Saint Swithun Wells, John Mason was a recusant Catholic who was friends with the many priests who came into England to bring the outlawed Sacraments. when Topcliffe and his men arrived to arrest Frs Gennings and Plasden, John Mason fought Topcliffe and the two men fell down the stairs. John Mason was hanged, drawn and quartered with Fr. Polydore who prayed fro him and encouraged the man as he died for Christ. Saint Polydore's father. He was a horner and owned a music shop in London. He raised Polydore a Catholic even amidst the persecutions, fines and punishments of Catholicism during Elizabethan England and gave his blessing when his son left for France to train to become a priest. Saint Swithun Wells. A devout Catholic layman who offered his home as a safe house for hunted priests and as a Mass centre in London. He was friends with Saint Polydore Plasden and it was in his home that the priests were captured. He was tried with Fr. Polydore Plasden and was killed with Saint Edmund Gennings. |
