Set Production and on location for St. Margaret Clitherow

Saint Margaret Clitherow.

Wife and mother, this English Catholic woman hid Catholic priests from the Elizabethan Government, for which she was eventually killed.  She was pressed to death under a large wooden door because she refused to go to trial and renounce her Catholic Faith.

John Clitherow

A wealthy butcher in York, he married St. Margaret Clitherow and loved her greatly. He had no interest in religion and conformed to the State Church but allowed St. Margraret to become a Catholic. He suffered greatly at her death but never became a Catholic and soon remarried.

Henry May

St. Margaret Clitherow's step-father, Henry May was a fierce Protestant and fiercely anti-Catholic. He was a wine merchant, Sherrif of York and an ambitious man.

The Earl of Huntingdon

A kinsman of Queen Elizabeth I, the Earl was sent to York to stamp out Catholicism.  Determined to make York a shining example to the Queen, he worked venemously against the Catholic Church, hung recusant Catholics, had priests arrested and executed and had lay Catholics imprisoned and ruthlessly hunted.

Judge Clench

At St. Margaret Clitherow's hearing he was determined to have her accept trial so that her husband and family would testify against her and likewise receive imprisonment.  By law he passed the death sentence of 'piene et dure forte' - St. Margaret was pressed to death.

Sheriff Roland Fawcett

He arrived at the Shambles and interrogated the children and servants in St. Margaret's home, eventually arresting St. Margaret Clitherow for the crime of harbouring Catholic priests.

Queen Elizabeth I

Daughter of King Henry VIII of England, the Queen wanted to be head of the Church as well as the State and established her Church of England of which she was the head and attendance was compulsory by law.  During her 'Golden Years' she outlawed Catholicism and executed fierce laws and sentences that saw hundreds of Catholic men and women murdered, and hung, drawn and quartered at her Triple Gallows.

Judge Francis Rhodes

A member of the council that were desperate to have St. Margaret Clitherow agree to a trial.

Ralph Hurlestone

Present at St. Margaret Clitherow's hearing, he tried to implicate St. Margaret Clitherow's husband and encourage St. Margaret's execution as quickly as possible.
