Saint Cuthman of Steyning:

Steyning is an ancient town in England that has existed since Anglo-Saxon times. It is most famous in the Catholic world as the place where Saint Cuthman, a shepherd boy, built a Catholic church. The church still stands today but as an Anglican place of worship since the Protestant Reformation. Saint Cuthman was a fervent Catholic boy who spent his shepherding days contemplating the mysteries of the Faith. When he and his paralysed mother fell upon hard times, he helped her into a wheelbarrow, gathered their few earthly possessions and set off for a new life, trusting that God would guide them. Cuthman vowed that wherever the rope assisting him in pushing his mother’s wheelbarrow broke, he would settle and build a Catholic church. Saint Cuthman is known famously for pushing his mother over the South Downs in a wheelbarrow. This unique image has been the subject of plays and paintings for centuries. The rope looped around Cuthman’s neck and tied to the handles of his wheelbarrow snapped in Steyning and there he and his mother settled. While building his church, Saint Cuthman attracted many local people whom he converted to the Catholic Faith. Our Lord Himself assisted in the building of the church, appearing during an especially difficult work of structure. Saint Cuthman eventually lived the rest of his life as a hermit, an inspiration to those who like to go alone to pray. He was venerated by Catholic England even before the Norman Conquest. He is a popular Catholic Saint of the British Isles today.
