Saint Bede: England's Doctor of the Church:
Saint Bede is known as the Father of English History and is one of the Doctors of the Catholic Church, sharing that title with other spiritual giants such as St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas and 31 more. He is not only an important English Saint in his own right, but is renowned for carefully preserving the accounts of the lives of many other Saints of early England and the Ecclesiastical history of the land.
He was a very devout and learned monk, spending his time living a life of deep prayer and study. He wrote much and because of his piety and gifts he was ordained a Catholic deacon at the age of 19. He was 30 when he was ordained a Roman Catholic priest.
As well as being a teacher, a translator and a writer, Saint Bede was also an accomplished singer. He offered all of his gifts for the glory of God and the salvation of souls.
Although he was considered to be the most learned man of his times, Saint Bede was first and foremost a devout and humble priest. He lived a long and edifying life, doing much for the Catholic Church in England and leaving us a wealth of riches in his work.
