It's the lead up to Black Friday in The Secondhand Bookworm, a rambling, three story bookshop with rooms full of shelves full of every kind, and any kind, of book, upon book, upon book! A treasure trove of bargains awaits the keen bibliophile in the new Bargain Book Yard at the back of the bookshop, but Nora Jolly soon discovers that there's nothing quite like the breed known as The Bargain Book Hunter.

Nora Jolly is hosting a Book Club over six weeks in the front room of The Secondhand Bookworm, a winding three storey shop filled to the brim with thousands upon thousands of used and antiquarian books. Eleven people have signed up for the club, including five of Nora’s work colleagues - the grim and frowning Roger, the exuberant newly employed Amy, the sarcastic older Betty (who’s on the lookout for romance), the bemused and eager Felix, and Nora’s sister-in-law Cara (who has hurt her back lifting books and is on a strict regime of the most bizarre stretches).

It’s Valentine’s Week in Castletown, so Nora and her colleagues at The Secondhand Bookworm are getting into the spirit of things, displaying as many romantic books the bay window shelves can hold, by offering free, carefully chosen (!) Love Heart Sweets from a red bowl on the bookshop counter, and by using charming smiles and fluttering eyelashes (much to Humphrey’s amusement and Harry’s delight) to lure eager browsers, buyers and bookworms into the famous three story shop, with its rickety winding staircase, its numerous creaky rooms and its delightful, narrow corridors crammed to the top and bursting at the seams with books upon books upon books, and more books!

It's Lockdown at The Secondhand Bookworm, a winding rickety old bookshop with three floors, endless rooms, hallways, shelves, cases, stairs, attic, kitchen and yard bursting at the seams with books upon books upon books, and more books! The bookshop has had to close for the unforeseeable future due to the global outbreak of an ancient virus so the manager, Nora Jolly, has prepared the shop, locked it up and relocated herself up the hill, through the castle gates and into guest quarters at the magnificent sprawling home of Castletown's very own royal resident, James, the Duke of Cole.

Erik Lodbrok, an enormous man with Norse blood, a body like Thor the god of Thunder and a frown that scares everyone, especially newcomer Wimsey (an Emo into Screamo), has arrived with a claim upon The Secondhand Bookworm. A ridiculous clause in the sale of the shop six years earlier to Georgina Pickering, Nora's friend and boss, has made the son of the former owners step in and threaten to usurp the literary labyrinth from Nora.
