Clare of Assisi, Saint
Saint Clare of Assisi:
Saint Clare of Assisi remembered Saint Francis of Assisi as a young, worldly Knight so when she witnessed his conversion, his public rejection of his family’s wealth and honours, and the taking upon himself of a life that stood in contradiction to the world, she was impressed and deeply moved. Saint Clare’s own spiritual life was already grounded firmly upon Catholic prayer, devotions and a love for the Most Holy Eucharist. She listened to Saint Francis preach and determined to imitate his life. Leaving her noble home at night, she met with the holy friars and Saint Francis cut off her hair, placing her into the care of a convent of nuns. Although pursued by her family who were determined to marry her off, she was eventually permitted to live out her vocation in peace. Gradually, Saint Clare was guided to found the Order of the Poor Clares, a Franciscan Order that lived a daily life away from the world, in enclosure. She led the Order with the greatest of humility, kissing the feet of her sisters, taking the lowest place, shining out as an example of prayer and devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. On one occasion, she stood at the walls of the convent, bearing the Monstrance containing the Most Holy Eucharist to ward off attacking soldiers. They were blinded and fled. Saint Clare remained a spiritual friend of Saint Francis until his death and continued to guide her sisters, leaving a legacy of powerful prayer and fidelity.
