Description:

Saint David of Wales is one of our Early British Saints who lived in the 6th century. His influence is still relevant for the Church today. He was a renowned preacher, teacher and founder, shining brightly as an example of prayer, virtue, daily sacrifice and devotion.

Saint David was a Bishop of Mynyw in Wales and had a great influence preserving and defending the Truths of the Catholic Faith in Britain during his time. In around the year 550, Saint David attended the Synod of Brefi, where his eloquence in opposing Pelagianism caused his fellow monks to elect him primate of the region. As such he presided over the synod of Caerleon, known as the "Synod of Victory" at around 569.

Not only was Saint David a great defender of the Faith, but he was a man of exceptional humility and prayer. He is most remembered for preaching to a large crowd, many of whom could not see him. The ground upon which he stood became a hillock, elevating him before the eyes of the people who then saw a white dove above him, lowering to rest upon the bishop’s shoulder.

Saint David wrote a monastic rule that would assist many in the journey of salvation. The Monastic Rule of David prescribed that his monks had to pull the plough themselves without draught animals, must drink only water and eat only bread with salt and herbs, and spend the evenings in prayer, reading and writing. No personal possessions were allowed: even to say "my book" was considered an offence. He lived a simple life and practised asceticism, teaching his followers to refrain from eating meat and drinking beer.

Saint David also had connections with Glastonbury Abbey which was a great place of honour to Our Lady. He left us some inspiring and beautiful last words.
