Saint Dymphna:
In these troubled times, the Catholic Church has given us a Patron Saint especially for moments of anxiety, depression and even despair. Her name is Saint Dymphna and for many ages she has been universally known as the Patron Saint of those in mental need.
Born to a king and queen in 7th century Ireland, Saint Dymphna came up close to the tragedy of mental illness and deterioration when her beautiful pious mother died. Her father suffered the loss sharply and turned his attention to his daughter as the only woman he desired to take his wife’s place at his side as his bride.
Legend tells of how Dymphna fled her father’s court, traveling with her Chaplain, two court servants and her friend, the King’s jester, to Geel in Belgium, where she settled and cared for the sick and mentally troubled of that region.
Her great example was rooted in the hearts and minds of the 7th century Christians, who remembered Dymphna’s service long after her father had hunted her down and slaughtered his daughter and her chaplain in his madness.
Dymphna’s story was passed on through oral tradition until the 13th century when it was written. The town of Geel became a beacon of light to those in mental need, and continues to be so today.
Saint Dymphna remains a powerful intercessor with an important story and a message for us all.
