Description:

Saint Edith Stein (St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross) was a German Jewish philosopher. Born into a Jewish family in 1891, she became an atheist in her teens. From the year 1913 she studied under Edmund Husserl, a German philosopher who established the school of phenomenology. Saint Edith taught, wrote and lectured in early 20th Century Germany, gaining an impressive reputation. It was while she stayed with friends that she picked up the autobiography of St. Teresa of Avila, read it in one sitting and concluded “This is the Truth”. She then studied the Catechism of the Catholic Church and after a sincere spiritual journey was baptized and eventually became a Carmelite nun. When the Nazis began to persecute the Jews in Germany, Edith and her sister Rosa left Germany in secret for the Netherlands. They were both arrested in 1942 by the Nazis. Saint Edith Stein had not completed her last great work ‘The Science of the Cross’ but she concluded it as a witness to Christ instead when she was taken to Auschwitz Concentration Camp and killed. Before her death she spent her few remaining days in the camps speaking with the Nazi guards about the Truth and comforting the Jewish children. Saint Edith Stein has left us a body of philosophical and Carmelite works that continue to guide and encourage Catholics today. We look at her writings, including her letter to Pope Pius XI and her many works as well as the climate of evil in which Saint Edith Stein gained her martyr’s crown. Our unique film style has been internationally praised for not only presenting facts and biographical information but a prayerful film experience.
