Description:
Saint Frideswide is the patron Saint of Oxford and one of our early British Saints. Despite being the daughter of one of the lower Mercian kings, Saint Frideswide sought a life of solitude and prayer in order to be alone with God.
After testing her vocation to the religious life, with the permission of her father Saint Frideswide became a nun and was soon guided to found an abbey which would later become the foundation for Cardinal Wolsey’s ‘Cardinal College’ until his fall from grace with King Henry VIII.
The devil was furious and jealous of Saint Fridewide’s prayers and sought to tempt and destroy her. He inspired King Agar to seek her out and claim her as his wife. Saint Frideswide famously fled her nunnery and lived in secret with two sisters in the forests around Oxford until the wayward king threatened to burn Oxford to the ground. She returned to defend her city and persuade King Agar of his errors. The king was struck blind as he entered Oxford and his sight was only restored upon his repentance and promise to leave the Saint alone.
Saint Frideswide has left us a powerful example of prayer, miracles and devotion in her life.
We also look at the history of her priory through the centuries to the present day, including her shrine, relics and Christ Church Cathedral in this new film from Mary’s Dowry Productions.
