Imagine spending a week in a haunted bookshop. It’s Halloween and Nora Jolly isn't amused to learn that the ghost of a boy who was trapped down a well haunts The Secondhand Bookworm, a rambling three story bookshop stuffed full of books, upon books, upon books, like a labyrinth designed to trap bibliophiles. The well has been covered and is under the flagstones by the front door, but people swear they can hear the ghost of the boy crying. It doesn't help that Mother Death Cap poisoned her children in Nora's new flat up the hill either. But at least the new Duke pays a visit and Nora receives a welcome surprise at the Castletown Screamie Awards. There are lots of laughs and plenty of bizarre and spooky happenings in Castletown as the council puts on Shriek-Week in the build up to Halloween. Silent black and white horror movies are showing in the old town hall, a ghost trail takes place in the Victorian jailhouse and dungeons, the Duke's Halloween Costume Ball offers transport up to the looming castle in a fleet of Halloween Tuk-Tuks, Slimy Saturday arrives with a host of stalls and events (including the Creepy Critters) and Nora’s found the perfect Steampunk outfit. There are two zombie apocalyptic walks, The Woman in Black is seen about the town, a terrifying Halloween Waxwork Marquee has been set up by the castle gates, people are placed in the stocks in the square, the Gorey-ent Express chugs into town, and Nora’s reading The Gashlycrumb Tinnies to a group of unsuspecting children. The infamous Ravens pay a visit, Nora and Georgina go on a call to a haunted barn full of coffins and through a cemetery filled with Weeping Angels; while customers in fancy dress roam the town, a Halloween silent disco boat has moored on the river, there are piles of Halloween literature and much more as Nora shudders, screams and hides from escaped convicts, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dracula, witches and werewolves and an enormous spider called ‘IT’ makes an unwelcome appearance among the decorations. Humphrey’s dressed as the vampire ghost of Sir Francis Walsingham, Cara’s decorated the shop like Shelob’s Lair, Spencer’s hosting a magic potion foray, a zombified vampire is singing The Monster Mash, Troy wants to go trick or treating, Betty’s convinced she looks like an old hag, Felix has embodied The Joker, and then of course, there’s James. It’s another ordinary week in The Secondhand Bookworm in book five of this hilarious series of novels set in an English antiquarian bookshop!
