Description:
When King Henry VIII of England broke away from the Catholic Church and entered into schism, he expected the Catholic clergy of the country to follow him. Only one Bishop stood up against the changes that the King was making to the Church – Saint John Fisher, the Bishop of Rochester. The Bishop’s stand against the King saw him persecuted, arrested and interred in the Tower of London. It was while in the Tower that Saint John Fisher was made the Cardinal of England, much to King Henry VIII’s anger. He held the position for only a month because he was beheaded on Tower Hill in June, 1535, dying a Martyr’s death for the Catholic Faith. Saint John Fisher had been renowned throughout England, especially for his preaching. Despite his fame and eloquence, he had been a man of deep humility and unwavering defence of the Truths of the Catholic Faith. His life was edifying to all who knew him and he has left us a body of writings and prayers that continue to inspire the faithful today. Saint John Fisher is one of our English Martyrs.
