Saint John of the Cross:
Saint John of the Cross, O.C.D. was a Spanish mystic, a Catholic Saint, a Carmelite friar and a priest who was born at Fontiveros, Old Castile in Spain in 1542. He was a major figure of the Counter-Reformation, also known as the Catholic Revival, which was the period of Catholic resurgence initiated in response to the Protestant Reformation, beginning with the Council of Trent. With Saint Teresa of Avila, Saint John of the Cross founded the Discalced Carmelites, which took the Carmelite Order back to its original roots and spirit. When he was arrested and imprisoned by his own religious brothers, he penned one of his most famous Catholic classics ‘The Dark Night of the Soul’. In this film, Saint John of the Cross’ devotions, prayers, writings and poetry are considered as well as his studies on the growth of the soul, his sufferings, and his love of the Passion and of the Cross. Saint John of the Cross was canonized a Saint in 1726 by Pope Benedict XIII. He is a Doctor of the Church.
