Saint Mary Mazzarello was a simple soul and in her simplicity she walked the narrow way, the road of the cross, of sacrifice, prayer and devotions, with a steady humility and pure love. She co-founded the Salesian Sisters.

A Simple Soul: Saint Mary Mazzarello:

Saint Mary Mazzarello was an Italian saint, described by Pope Pius XI thus: ‘Here is a woman of simplicity, extreme simplicity – a simplicity as pure as that of simple elements, as simple and unmixed as gold without alloy!”. Sometimes we want to overcomplicate things, such as our prayer lives and the way we look at the Church, the world or even the road to heaven. Saint Mary Mazzarello was a simple soul and in her simplicity she walked the narrow way, the road of the cross, of sacrifice, prayer and devotions, with a steady humility and pure love.

Saint Don Bosco recognised Mary’s virtues and chose her to co-found the Salesian sisters under the title of ‘Daughters of our lady help of Christians’. Mary dedicated her life to teaching young girls the Catholic faith and guiding her sisters along the path of holiness. She died when she was 44 years of age and is one of the great saints of the church.
