Description:
Saint Piran was originally from Ireland. He was called by Christ to the religious life and studied to become a monk. Saint Piran was a great defender and preacher of the Catholic Faith. His preaching so annoyed a group of pagans in Ireland that they tied a millstone around his neck and threw him over the cliff into the sea hoping to get rid of him.
The sea immediately became calm and Saint Piran floated safely across it to England where he landed in Cornwall and set up life as a hermit. Saint Piran spent his time praying, fasting and in contemplation, with birds and animals as his only companions. After a time, other Catholics joined him and soon his reputation for holiness and knowledge spread and Saint Piran was asked to assist the local people. It was Saint Piran who rediscovered tin smelting when he heated a slab of tin-bearing ore and the tin rose to the surface in the shape of a white cross. A flag bearing a white cross remains Saint Piran’s flag today.
Although an early Saint, Saint Piran was not forgotten by the faithful during the harsh persecutions of the Protestants in England against devotion to the Saints. He remains today a popular Saint for all Christians, especially in Cornwall. The history of devotion to him throughout 1,500 years of Catholic history and heritage in England, as well of his life, remains an inspiring source of interest and devotion.
