In Elizabethan England, Catholics faithful to the One, True Church were called recusants. Scattered throughout the country, this remnant Church were deprived of the Sacraments, fined if they did not attend the Protestant State Church and found that praying the rosary, carrying rosary beads or even lighting devotional candles were outlawed and punishable by fines. Saint Robert Southwell was an English Roman Catholic priest of the Jesuit Order. He was also a clandestine missionary in Elizabethan England during the persecution of the Catholic Church by the government. Saint Robert ministered to many hundreds of Catholics including the wife of St. Philip Howard, the Earl of Arundel. After being arrested and tortured by Sir Richard Topcliffe, Queen Elizabeth I’s chief priest catcher, Saint Robert Southwell was imprisoned in the Tower of London, tried and convicted of high treason. On 21 February 1595 he was hanged, drawn and quartered at Tyburn for defending his priesthood, the Catholic Faith, and for ministering to the illegal remnant faithful. He is one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales.
