Description:
The Brown Scapular is a sacramental at the forefront of Catholic devotions and sacramentals, recommended by countless Popes, Saints and the Catholic Church as a sign of our consecration to Our Lady. The Brown Scapular is worn by millions the world over and as with the Miraculous Medal and the Rosary is a source of many great graces.
The Brown Scapular was given to the world by Our Lady through a simple monk in Kent, England in the 13th century. Saint Simon Stock, so named because he used to live as a hermit in a large, hollow tree (stock – tree trunk), was a Carmelite friar with a fascinating and important life that impacted the Catholic Church.
Saint Simon was born in England and joined the Carmelite Order shortly after it had migrated to England. He lived in Aylesford and presided over the first General Chapter of the Carmelite Order since leaving the Holy Land.
His life was one of piety, zeal and devotion and he loved Our Lady deeply. Our Lady appeared to Saint Simon and gave him the Brown Scapular with assurances and promises attached to it for those who would devoutly wear it.
After a busy, influential and deeply spiritual life as a Carmelite monk, Saint Simon died in France and his relics were protected from the destruction of relics by the Protestants in England during the 16th Century Reformation. Thus, his skull was returned to Aylesford in 1950 and can be venerated there today.
